Ways to Save
- Discover your ideal indoor temperature during heating (typically 68°-70°). Set your thermostat for this temperature and avoid thermostat juggling.
- Apply the same principle to the cooling season. You can calculate the ideal summer indoor temperature by subtracting 15° from the outdoor temperature. (90°outdoors = 75° indoors).
- Dress appropriately for the season even when indoors. This especially will make a difference in the colder months.
- Maintain the comfort in your home during the heating season through proper humidification. Since moist air retains heat a moist room will feel warmer. A Carrier humidifier will help save energy.
- Check into a Carrier Programmable thermostat. A Carrier Programmable can be programmed to perform at precise temperatures throughout the day.
- Clean or replace your furnace filters regularly. Dirty filters make your system work harder. A Carrier air cleaner can cut down on the dirt in your indoor air and extends the life of your filters. Also sign-up for an Annual Energy Savings Agreement (ESA) with James Lane Air Conditioning & Plumbing.
- Close the damper on your fireplace when it's not in use. Fireplaces can create drafts and draw valuable heat up the flue. Remember to have your fireplace inspected and cleaned on a regular schedule.
- Check the seals around your windows and doors and apply the necessary caulking to prevent energy loss.
- Leave your storm windows on all year long. They provide valuable year-round insulation. Storm windows can create substantial fuel savings.
- Apply weather stripping to all exterior doors. As with windows this will prevent drafts and energy loss.
- Check the insulation in your ceilings and walls. Homes without proper insulation use twice as much fuel to heat as a home with proper insulation.
- Check your systems duct work for air leaks, usually in the attic.
- Windows should have ample coverings to provide shade from warm sunlight in summer months. Draperies can provide added insulation in winter.
- Avoid placing furniture over or in front of registers or air returns. This can affect your system's efficiency.
- Keep your garage door closed in winter and summer.
- In summer, avoid activities such as cooking or laundering during warmest periods of the day. Your system will work harder to keep your home cool.
- Fill your dishwasher completely before running it. In summer months, the dishwasher can add to humidity and make your system work harder to cool.
- Look into Carrier High Efficiency Air Conditioning and Heating Systems. Contact the sales staff at James Lane Air Conditioning & Plumbing for information and pricing to upgrade your current system. Don't buy equipment that is larger than you need.
- When purchasing a new or replacement condensing unit, request that it be placed on the shaded side of your home. This protects it from the heat of the sun.
- Prevention can make a difference. Have your system cleaned and checked by James Lane Air Conditioning and Plumbing at least once a season.
